Hanoi

HANOI, capital of Vietnam is a city full of charm, with remarkable colonial architecture, large shady avenues and numerous lakes and gardens. The old quarter, near the small lake, is a labyrinth of pastel coloured lanes, stalls, hawkers, cyclos and motorbikes. Everything is situated around the 36 old streets and Dong Xuan Market. Hoan Kiem Lake or "small lake" and Ngoc Son Temple, located in the heart of the city, are some of the most beautiful sites. Other marvellous places include the West Lake, Temple of Literature, One-Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum, and Quan Thanh Temple. Hanoi is the heart of a thriving modern country.

ClimateThe south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast is dry from May to October and wet from December to February. The highland areas are significantly cooler than the lowlands, and temperatures can get down to freezing in winter. The north has two seasons: cool, damp winters (November to April) and hot summers (May to October). There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November, affecting the north and central areas

VisaAll visitors are required to have a valid visa to enter Vietnam. A one-month tourist visa is usually sufficient for most visitors. All visitors must obtain visa aproval from the Vietnamese Immigration Department before a visa is issued

HealthVisitors should be innoculated against typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A and B, tetanus and polio. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving within six days of visiting infected areas. Malaria is present in most of the region and it is advisable to take precautions especially if travelling off the beaten track. Medical facilities can be limited and it is essential to take out a comprehensive medical insurance policy before travelling
