Borneo Tour For Nature Lovers

Day 1: Sandakan / Sepilok (Arrival)

Meet and greet upon arrival at Sandakan Airport and transfer to your Sepilok Nature Resort for check-in, rest of day at leisure. Dinner at the lodge.

“Sepilok is short for the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, a lowland dipterocarp forest which measures some, 4,294 hectares in area, comprising of mainly virgin primary lowland forest and some mangrove swamps. This Forest Reserve, only 25 km from the center of the city of Sandakan, was set aside many decades ago primary for the rehabilitation of displaced and orphaned Orang-Utans.
From the balconies of your rustic cabins you can relax in a hammock and enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding natural landscape. Be prepared, though, to accept the symphony of the night, preformed incessantly by myriad insects and night birds, and at dawn, be awakened by the call of the wild birds as they begin the day searching for food.”

Day 2: Sepilok / Abai

0900 hrs: check-out and pick-up for your transfer to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform.

1000 hours: feeding of Orang Utan. At this centre, observe man’s closest relative “the Orang Utan” being rehabilitated to become wild in their natural habitat and experience a walk in Tropical Lowland Dipterocarp Forest of Borneo. Visit to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the centre that managed to improve the living condition of the rescued sun bear and released their natural behaviours in the 2.5ha enclosed forest.

1115 hours: depart Sepilok Centre transfer to jetty in Sandakan for scheduled boat departs at 1200noon. Take an hour boat cruise up to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary where you will take your lunch at Abai Jungle Restaurant. This is a wonderful journey of discovery which starts from the waters of Sulu Sea of Sandakan Town through the magnificent scenery of the Mangrove Forest. Check in at Abai Jungle Logde. Late in the afternoon, you will be experiencing a cruise to search for wildlife until sunsets while enjoying a cup of coffee; by the night falls continue the night cruise to witness the fireflies lit up as Christmas tree. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, again experience the “Jungle at night” at our nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other wildlife with our nature guide.

Day 3: Abai / Sukau

Wake up by the calls of nature. Early morning take a river trip to Pitas Oxbow Lake to observe wildlife and experience the unique of Pitas Oxbow Lake. After breakfast, you are invited to join our tree planting project with the locals, enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villagers at Abai Village. This project specially design to help the locals. After lunch, cruise up river to Sukau village in search of primates especially the wild orang utan, birds, pygmy elephant and other wildlife. Arrive Sukau, check in at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Late afternoon, take another river cruise to Menanggul River, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 4: Sukau / Sandakan / Kota Kinabalu

After breakfast, transfer by boat back to Sandakan. Upon arrival at jetty, lunch before transfer to airport for your flight (preferably flight ETD after 1350 hours). Meet and greet upon arrival at Kinabalu International Airport and transfer to your hotel, rest of day at leisure.

*Note: For flight departing Sandakan before 1350 hours, lunch will not be provided.

Day 5: Kota Kinabalu

Today you will embark on a full day exploration tour on a Vespa - A Tribal Vespa Journey.

Pick up from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu city and proceed to transfer to the meeting point. Depart at 0800 hrs and ride out-town to a viewpoint overlooking Kota Kinabalu bay and the T.A.R Marine Park. Enjoy the panorama view and snap some photos before proceeding downhill to the Mari Mari Cultural Village located deep in the countryside away from Kota Kinabalu city. The cultural village operates as a museum that preserves Borneo ethnic cultures.

You will be ushered to the warmth of different homes of the ethnicities of Sabah. Each home was built by descendants of the tribes they represent and offer you a truly genuine experience seeing everything in and around the village lends to its magical prowess of taking you back in time. Not only does this village portray these tribes through the architectural genius of their traditional houses, but also through a range of simulated lives of the olden epoch by the residents of the village.

Acquaint yourself with each tribe as they let you come into their house and their simple yet intricate lives. As you traverse the village, you will find demonstration huts along the main houses in which daily activities of old times come into life. For example, the making of blowpipe, starting a fire (from bamboo tree – you will learn the steps of making fire without the help of a lighter), tattoo-making (and its symbolisms) and etc. Lastly enjoy traditional dances in a remote forest setting followed by a simple lunch. After lunch, it’s time to bid farewell to the villagers.

Get back on the saddle and proceed to a nearby waterfall for a refreshing dip. Afterward ride back to Kota Kinabalu, stopping at the Chinese Buddhist Temple of Puh Toh Tze with its traditional Chinese roofing and structure and at the Kota Kinabalau City Mosque with its blue dome. Return to the staring point.

Tour Info:
• Tour is based on Non-Rider: Client will be the pillion on a Vespa ridden by company staff. Request is available for client who wish to join the tour as a rider.
• Difficulty Level: Easy / Kilometres: 60km
• A minimum age of 13 years is required to participate.
• In order to ensure a smooth ride, the Vespa load limit should not exceed 150kg.
• Refundable Damage Security Deposit (Cash only): A refundable deposit of RM400.00 is required during scooter pick-up and will be refunded upon returning of vehicle in its original condition. If damages to the vehicle occurred during the tour, the necessary repairing charges will be deducted from the deposit.
• Recommended personal gear: Insect repellent, sun block lotion, extra clothing, towel, swim wear, flip flops, camera and sunglasses.

Day 6: Kota Kinabalu

Early breakfast at hotel before embarking on a full day Kinabalu Park & Poring Hot Spring tour (Duration: 10 hrs).

Take a scenic 2 hours’ drive to Kinabalu Park passing by villages and paddy fields along mountainous roads that wind along the Crocker range. Along the way, make a brief stop at Nabalu Market. Nabalu is a place where the local natives gather to sell local produce, fruits, home grown vegetables and handicraft souvenirs.

On arrival at Kinabalu Park, you will notice the change in air temperature. Enjoy the refreshing and cooling air as you proceed for a walk along the nature trails in the Botanical Garden. If the day is clear, you may even spot a majestic view of Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain between the New Guinea and Himalaya. Kinabalu Park boasts an estimate of 4,500 species of plants which include 1,500 species of orchids, 77 of which are endemic to Kinabalu. The park also supports 289 species of birds and 290 different types of butterflies. After the walk, depart for lunch at a local restaurant.

Later, depart for another interesting wonder, the Poring Hot Spring. At approximately 47 kilometres (1 hour drive) from Kinabalu Park, Poring Hot Spring got its name from the tall bamboo plant that is abundant in that area. At the natural hot spring, there are Japanese baths where visitors can soak themselves and let the invigorating sulphurous water stimulate the body. It is believed to have curative power. Visitors can also try the Canopy Walkway, where suspension bridges are suspended at the top of the tropical jungle. Experience the height of 41 metres above the ground and length of 157 metres. A 20 minutes hike is needed to reach the Canopy Walkway.

Return to Kota Kinabalu for an approximately 2 hours’ journey and drop off at your respective hotel.

Note: As Poring Hot Spring is a public area, you may expect big crowd of visitors and locals during weekends & public holidays.

Day 7: Kota Kinabalu
