Historic Route - Axum & Lalibela


5 Days

Day One: Arrive Addis Ababa (New Flower) 

A warm greeting awaits you upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.  This day if time allows, you will go on a city tour.  The city tour will include the National Museum, which exhibits   the archaeological finding of human evolution and hominid skeleton dating back to 3.2 million years ago and called Lucy, and Trinity cathedral church. Overnight at your hotel.

Day Two:  Fly Addis Ababa- Axum

Early in the morning transfer to the airport to fly to Axum, a town steeped in more than 2500 years of history. From the palace and tomb of King Kaleb (6th C, AD) we will visit the extraordinarily Stella Fields and the tomb of King Remhay (1st to 4th century, AD), followed by the a trip to the church of St Mary of Tsion, (17th C, AD the present church) in which the Arc of the Covenant was deposited.  Drive out of the town 4km on the way to Gondar where you walk up to see a rock carved lion and palace from where the Stellas were hewn- some still lie there, half finished. From here we can visit the palace of the Queen of Sheba. Overnight at your hotel.

Day Three: Fly Axum-Lalibela (The Eighth Wonder of the World Rock-hewn churches) 

After breakfast transfer to airport and fly to Lalibela. Start visiting the cluster of churches including the famous church of St. George which is carved like a cross out of the red rock. Lunch at your hotel and in the afternoon start visiting the amazing rock hewn churches – another UNESCO World Heritage site – that will simply amaze you. Overnight at your hotel.

Day Four - Asheten Mariam Church

In the morning trek and ride a mule to the top of Asheton Mountain, for a visit to the chiseled single rock church Asheton Mayam by King Lailbela.  You will return around mid-day and in the afternoon you will visit the remaining 5 rock hewn churches. Overnight at your hotel.

Day Five – Lalibela -Addis Ababa Mercato

You will be transferred to the airport to fly back to Addis.  After lunch, visit ‘Mercato’ the biggest open air market in Africa. Dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant where you can experience local music and dance.  Transfer to the airport for departure.
