Sumatra is an island in western Indonesia, westernmost of the Sunda Islands. It is the largest island entirely in Indonesia and the sixth largest island in the world at approximately 470,000 km²,with a population of 45,000,000. Its biggest city is Medan with a population of 2,400,000.
The backbone of the island is the Barisan mountains chain, with the active volcano Mount Kerinci's 3,805 m (12,467 ft) the highest point, located at about the midpoint of the range. The volcanic activity of this region endowed the region with fertile land and beautiful sceneries, for instance around the Lake Toba.
Day 1: MEDAN - BOHOROK
On arrival at Polonia Airport Medan, meet and welcome by our representative, and transfer to Bohorok. The drive is approximately 3 hours, passing through Binjai and some small towns as well as countryside landscape, with some stops at rubber, oil palm and cacao plantations en-route. Arrive in Bohorok and check in at the hotel for overnight. Accommodation at Bukit Lawang Cottages or similar.
Day 2: BOHOROK - BERASTAGI
After breakfast at the hotel, visit the orang utan rehabilitation center; walk along the Bohorok riverbank to the crossing point and cross over the river by small canoe to the center. Hike up to the feeding site to see the activities of the young orang utans who are trained to return to their natural habitat.
Afterwards, continue the journey to Berastagi through Medan – a mountain resort with its refreshing weather and magnificent mountain scenery which has an abundance of flowers, vegetables and fruits (most famous of which is the “Marquise” passion fruit). On the way, visit Peceren, the old Karo Batak village and fruit market. Arrive in Berastagi and check in at the hotel for overnight. Accommodation at Sibayak Hotel or similar. (B)
Day 3: BERASTAGI – LAKE TOBA / SAMOSIR ISLAND
After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Lake Toba, one of the deepest and largest crater lakes in the world; on the way, visit the Sipiso-piso waterfall. The road to the waterfall overlooks Lake Toba and offers a magnificent view. Visit the ancient long palace of the former Batak Simalungun King at Pematang Purba, where you can see the old Batak Simalungun Palace complete with a courtroom and execution yard. Arrive in Parapat, a resort town on the shore of Lake Toba. Continue crossing the Lake to Samosir Island for overnight. Accommodation at Toledo Inn or similar. (B)
Day 4: SAMOSIR TOUR
After breakfast at the hotel, a full-day excursion on Samosir Island to explore the beauty and cultural aspects of Batak. You will be visiting Ambarit, famous for the remnant megalithic culture of Batak Toba. In Simanindo you will see the folkdance performed by the villagers. On the way back to your hotel you will visit Tomok village with its sarcophagus and old tombs of king Sidabutar. Accommodation at Toledo Inn or similar. (B)
Day 5: SAMOSIR ISLAND – SIPIROK / PADANG SIDEMPUAN
After breakfast at the hotel, cross back to Parapat and drive up to Sipirok / Padang Sidempuan with a view of the marching mountains - “Bukit Barisan”. On the way, stop at Jangga Dolok, a typical Batak Toba village, a pineapple farm, the market place in Balige, and the sulphur hot springs in Sipoholon.
In the afternoon, arrive at your hotel for overnight. Accommodation at Natama Hotel or similar. (B)
Day 6: SIPIROK / PADANG SIDEMPUAN - BUKITTINGGI
After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Bukittinggi. Enjoy the scenery of mountains, rivers, valleys and traditional villages. Stop to see Sijornih Waterfall, Sihepeng botanical garden, Muslim school, gold seeking (activity subject to availability) and Bonjol where a monument marks the equator. In late afternoon or the evening, arrival in the Minagkabau region, famous for its matrilineal society. Accommodation at Pusako Hotel or similar. (B)
Day 7: BUKITTINGGI
After breakfast at the hotel, a city tour including visit to the clock tower (“Jam Gadang”), which overlooks the colourful market (“Pasar Atas”), the Dutch fort called De Kock, Sianok Valley, and Pandai Sikat, a village famous for its “Songket” hand weaving cloth and wood carving. Travel further to Padang Panjang, a site which will show you how the real traditional houses in west Sumatra looked in centuries back. In the afternoon, transfer back to your hotel. Accommodation at Pusako Hotel or similar. (B)
Day 8: BUKITTINGGI – PADANG AIRPORT
After breakfast at the hotel, free at leisure until time to leave for the airport. It takes about 2 hours, passing by the lush greenery and spectacular views of Anai Valley and waterfall. (B)
